Chinonye Chukwu was born on May 19th, 1989 in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. She moved to Oklahoma at a year old and spent most of her childhood in Alaska starting at age six.

Her highly energized personality has filled her directorial visions with passion and devotion to crafting films that establish meaningful narratives. Her outlook on storytelling heavily relies on actors who tell stories with their eyes, ask the right questions, and become vulnerable in their roles. An actor who is hungry and talented can take Chukwu’s historical storytelling intentions and place them into a jelly jar, where they can consume all its deliciousness to become enveloped in her world of fruitful ideas. Once the soul has developed a state of mind to become a character, it provides an opportunity for an actor to prove they are fully immersed, both internally and externally, as a different person.

Chukwu doesn’t just believe in passion but in fear as a director. Fear holds her accountable to do her best. She strives to create something different each time. This ambition comes with a compelling urge to precisely identify what she wants as an artist. An artist who can walk away from a disoriented system to pursue a true storytelling aspiration demonstrates an example of a valid artistic trajectory.

With much creative autonomy, she makes sure to stay focused as a filmmaker. However, things don’t always go in her direction. Even though she is clear and consistent in her intentions, clarity for an overall vision is a miracle. Her focus allows her to create concrete backup plans. If one plan doesn’t work out, the backup must tie into her larger vision as a director. It is most critical to stay within the emotional journey of the story. Maximizing the chance to grasp an effective shot could mean fewer takes to embody more of the story. She is always ready to receive the actors' presence rather than meticulously planning it.

Chukwu was inspired to become a filmmaker by Federico Fellini’s 8 ½. Her films are a form of activism. As history is being erased, she continues to make films with themes of prejudice and race to instigate change. Clemency, the film that won a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, showcases the emotional and psychological turmoil of Bernadine, a woman who carries out executions. Her first studio film Till, dives into the first-person perspective of Maimie, a black mother who lost her son Emmitt Till to lynching. The film garnered attention and was even shown at the white house. Centering a black woman's rightful place in history was key to Chukwu’s goal as a filmmaker.

Her creative choices push justice through the roof and present unique perspectives to her audience. Getting under the skin to capture every possible nuance is a directorial staple for underscoring the thematic rollercoaster in Chukwu’s films. That surely has left an indelible mark on filmmaking as a whole.

The star of the show always catches our eye, but others in sight, almost unnoticeable, hold the most truth. Picture Tom Cruise sitting in a cafe eating a croissant. Who makes that idea of a scene so vivid? Is it Tom Cruise, the people in the background, or the croissant? I say the croissant, but Jill Goldston's experience begs to differ. Goldston, a prolific extra, has a long-lasting 60-year career that has shaped her view on the film industry. From being unable to make direct eye contact with Tom Cruise, dinners with David Bowie, and love scenes with ex-Bond Timothy Dalton, answers whether or not film extras play a big role. Goldston's husband Geoff kept count of every single job Goldston was involved in. An immense record of 1,951 appearances caught the attention of Anthony Ing. Anthony Ing is a British Chinese-Canadian filmmaker, composer, and co-founder of the production company Loop. Fascinated by those behind the spotlight, Ing’s search through Goldston's vast film history has allowed him to get a sense of her work’s impact. He feels as if he is in her shoes when sifting through her past in images. Ing made an English short documentary titled ‘Jill Uncredited’ that was nominated at the Berlinale competition.
